Sedibelo! Kgabo!

The Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela is a forward thinking Batswana community split across the border between Botswana and South Africa. We are based in Mochudi in the Kgatleng District of southern Botswana and in Moruleng in the Pilanesberg area of South Africa’s North West Province.

While we are integrally connected, you will discover that we have developed under very different political and economic circumstances over the last 140 years.

As one people, we are committed to ensuring that our shared cultural heritage, traditions and value systems are upheld for the benefit of current and future generations.

This commitment has resulted in the development of an exceptional cultural heritage project. We hope you will enjoy this journey with us.

The meaning of Sedibelo and Kgabo

When you attended Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela ceremonies or gatherings there is a special greeting that takes place between Kgosikgolo (the king) and his people. When Kgosikgolo greets us he calls out, “Sedibelo!” and we respond “Kgabo!”
